It's a common misconception that vehicles parked in a carport or driveway are safe from theft.  However, this couldn't be further from the truth.  Leaving your vehicle unlocked, even in your own yard, presents a significant risk.

Here's why:

• Opportunity:  Even in seemingly safe areas, thieves are constantly seeking opportunities.  An unlocked vehicle is an open invitation for them to take advantage of.
• Convenience:  Thieves often target unlocked vehicles because it's easier and quicker for them to access valuables.  They can grab items and be gone in seconds, making it difficult to catch them.
• Valuable Items:  Even if you don't keep valuables in your vehicle, thieves may still target it for its parts or accessories.  Items like catalytic converters, wheels, and stereos are often stolen and sold on the black market.

Beyond the risk of theft, leaving your vehicle unlocked also poses a safety hazard:

• Children:  An unlocked vehicle can be a tempting target for children, who may be drawn to the interior or even attempt to play inside.
• Animals:  Similarly, pets can easily escape from an unlocked vehicle, potentially leading to them getting lost or injured.

Taking a few simple steps can significantly reduce your risk:

• Always lock your vehicle, even when parked at home.
• Remove valuables from your vehicle, or at least store them out of sight.
• Consider installing an alarm system or other security measures.
