Holiday treats for your furry friend

The holidays are a time for celebration and indulging, and that includes our furry friends! But just like with our own holiday feasts, it's important to make sure the treats we give our pups are safe and healthy.

No-Nos for Your Pup
You might think that sharing your holiday goodies is a great way to show your pup some love, but there are some things you should absolutely avoid giving them. Chocolate, for example, is a big no-no. It contains theobromine, a compound that can be toxic to dogs.  Other things to steer clear of include:

  • Grapes and raisins: These can cause kidney failure in dogs.
  • Macadamia nuts: These can cause weakness, tremors, and vomiting.
  • Onions and garlic: These can damage red blood cells.
  • Alcohol:  This is extremely toxic to dogs.
  • Xylitol: This artificial sweetener is found in many sugar-free foods and can be fatal to dogs.

Safe and Delicious Treats
So, what can you give your pup to enjoy during the holidays?  There are plenty of safe and delicious treats available!

  • Homemade treats: You can find tons of recipes online for homemade dog treats.  Just make sure to use safe ingredients.
  • Commercial treats: There are many commercial treats available that are specifically designed for dogs. Look for treats that are low in fat and sugar and made with high-quality ingredients.
  • Fruits and vegetables:  Many fruits and vegetables are safe for dogs to eat in moderation. Some good options include apples, bananas, carrots, and blueberries. Just make sure to remove any seeds or pits.

A Little Goes a Long Way
Remember, even safe treats should be given in moderation.  Too much of anything can upset your pup's stomach. And always consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions about what's safe for your dog to eat.

With a little planning, you can make sure your pup has a happy and healthy holiday season!
